In August, 1908, I was taken with intense pain in my side, which continued for several hours. About midnight I called a practitioner; but, as relief did not come quickly, some members of the family became alarmed and a physician was sent for, who administered an opiate. The next day at noon he came with another doctor to take me to a hospital, saying that an operation was all that could save me. To this I objected, but the physician, who was a friend of the family, said I had better go at once. I did not, however, consent, but said I would let him know. Later I telephoned him that he need not come, and again I sent for the Christian Science practitioner. Relief was slow in coming, but the truth finally overcame the error and I was relieved. After this experience, other diseases seemed to reappear, but they were met and healed; also the tobacco habit was destroyed. (I had requested the Scientist to treat me for this.) Even my father, who came to see me, said, "Well, if Christian Science heals him, I will never take any more medicine; but he will never get out of that bed." I was healed, however, and my father was as good as his word, and has given up medicine.
Several months later, the physician mentioned asked a member of the household how I was, and was told that I had never been better and that I weighed thirty pounds more than usual. He replied, "Well, he can get down on his knees and thank God that he is alive." He also said there was every evidence that my disease had reached the stage usually considered fatal. Surely Christian Science does heal "all manner of disease," and I thank God for this evidence of His ever-presence and power. I also thank dear Mrs. Eddy, who has heard His voice and given this understanding to humanity so long burdened with sin and sickness.—Hosea W. Rowell, Marinette, Wis.
