Christian Science teaches that God is Spirit, manifested...

Butte (Mont.) Miner

Christian Science teaches that God is Spirit, manifested as divine Life, Truth, and Love. It assumes, therefore, that all cause and effect, law, activity, and force must be the manifestation of Truth, which is always the outcome of good. We have, then, an unchanging creator.

Prayer is an effort to approach God—to come into His presence. When a man prays he desires something. He wants something brought to pass. Let us see how the Christian Scientist prays: He sees around him the sin, the woe, and the sickness, but has learned that they are temporary monstrosities which are apparently occupying God's place and power, and manifesting a will which is not the will of the Father. The Christian Scientist remembers that God, Spirit, is All-in-all, that "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." He knows at once he cannot believe the testimony of both Spirit and matter. So he chooses that of Spirit, and realizes what James meant when he said, "And the prayer of faith shall save the sick."

We would not ridicule the musician because he maintains that discord is not the real and should not be dwelt on because it does not express the principle of music, which is harmony. Christian Science is no less consistent because it maintains that sin and sickness are discordant conditions which deny God's allness and should not be dwelt on. When mankind manifest "the Spirit of truth" and do "the will of the Father" more naturally, then they will not rely on a drug, mental or bodily manipulation, suggestion, hypnotism, or creed to realize that their prayers are answered.
