THE LECTURES

Prof. Hermann S. Hering spoke on Christian Science at the Barton Opera House last night [April 5] to a large audience. He was introduced by City Trustee Klette, who said in part,—

Nineteen centuries ago, in the far East, Jesus of Nazareth went forth throughout the land preaching a new doctrine, the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. He taught, saying, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." He laid down the great commandments, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." These great commandments encompassed his teachings. And he went forth and healed the sick. The lame were made to walk; the blind were made to see; the lepers were cleansed. Yea, he raised the dead. And then, that a doubting world might understand and believe, he raised himself after his crucifixion and appeared to his followers.

He sent his disciples forth, and commanded them, saying, "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give." He said again, "And these signs shall follow them that believe; ... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." And he gave to all the world for all time a great promise when he said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." He plainly meant that all people in all ages who followed his teachings could heal the sick and raise the dead, as did he. Some of his followers for a brief time understood his teachings and were able to heal, but soon the great truth of the Christ-healing was lost to the world.
