In his argument the clerical critic says, "At length Christian Science came. It is associated with a great human interest. Exemption from limitation, pain, sorrow, defeat; freedom from the conditions of finite existence, life liberated from mortal restraint, buoyant and full in the might of the eternal, is surely a great aspiration. Who is there who does not sympathize with it?" He follows this with the suggestion that Christian Science attempts to secure these desirable ends through a species of intoxication which makes one "oblivious to the restraints of finite existence." That these good results are secured through Christian Science is proved by thousands of people who have made a thorough study of the subject, and who will unite in saying that its conclusions are the logical result of right reasoning from the plain statements contained in the Bible as to the infinite goodness and power of God, and the admonitions and commands of Jesus to his followers.

There has been a constant effort among philosophers and deep thinkers of all ages to free mankind from the depressing tendencies of finite existence. The prophets of olden times looked for the coming of the Christ who would make plain the way of salvation from the evils of the world. When he came, in fulfilment of prophecy, he was "despised and rejected of men." The scribes and Pharisees would not accept him because his teaching was not in accord with their preconceived ideas, but demanded a more absolute reliance upon spiritual power than they would concede. The tendency of the advanced religious thought of the world today is toward a more absolute acceptance of all the commands of the Master, and to remember that he not only told his followers to "preach the gospel," but also to "heal the sick."
