San Francisco (Cal.) Chronicle

It may be that men ought to flock to the churches to hear weekly expositions of abstract Christian doctrine, but as a matter of fact they won't. There have been periods in the world's history when the people of certain races were completely absorbed in the niceties of Christian doctrine and took keen delight in hair-splitting differentiation of truth from heresy, a feeling and practice which destroyed the unity of the Christian church. Those days have passed and will not return. The modern church is built up only as the church of Christ was built up—by healing the sick, the dispensation of charity, the inculcation of the moral virtues, respect for authority, and faith in the benevolence and wisdom of a Supreme Being. And in so far as the churches follow the plans of their Master, and only in so far, is there any approach to Christian unity and an increase of Christian influence.
