INCLUDES MRS. EDDY

N.Y Herald

You have asked for answers to your question, "Who are the ten greatest living Americans?" While your question expressly excepts those in political life, it does not expressly except women, though you seem to assume that the ten greatest living Americans are "mere male men." Herein I differ with you. My list is as follows:—

Mary Baker Eddy.
Julia Ward Howe.
Thomas A. Edison.
Alexander Graham Bell.
Wright brothers.
Booker T. Washington.
Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain).
William De Baron Jenney.
John D. Rockefeller.
Andrew Carnegie.

I have selected these names for their distinguished greatness, for some great and good achievement, the memory of which will outlast the performance and gather luster with the years. It is an almost invidious selection among American people, whose average greatness is so remarkable.
