Christian Science came to me at a time when I was in...
Christian Science came to me at a time when I was in a troubled condition, mentally and physically, but as I look back now I can see the guiding hand of divine Love through it all. I thought I had ceased to pray, but my one desire was that we might be led to something or some place where health could be restored. A lady who had just been healed in Christian Science told me of her experience, and was so kindly persistent that I finally consented to attend one of the Wednesday evening meetings. I was much impressed with what I heard there, but perhaps more by the large number of people who were in attendance—something entirely different from the ordinary prayer-meeting. Three years previous to this I had been stricken with paralytic trouble, the entire left side being affected. I lay almost helpless for three months, but with kind care by the attending physician and my relatives, I recovered sufficiently in a few months to be able to do my housework. I was, however, a cripple and an almost constant sufferer. Three physicians, who were consulted about the case, said it would be necessary for me to undergo a delicate surgical operation as a precaution against another attack. My life was one of constant fear when we went to Oakland, Cal., where I hoped a change of climate would prove beneficial; if not, then the operation.
At this time we were told of Christian Science. At my request a quiet pleasant gentleman was sent to me, and after some conversation he asked me to put aside all material remedies. I hesitated, for I knew nothing about putting my trust in God. The Bible was a book that had been almost entirely discarded from our home several years before. I finally consented, but felt I was giving up a great deal. I little realized that I was putting off the "old man with his deeds," but after sleeping all night and awaking to find the bright summer sun shining in my room, I realized that I was free from pain. I woke, too, to the fact that the sunlight of Truth and Love was shining in my consciousness, and that it had awakened hope and peace. I had wakened to a new world—I had found the place where I could, as one of our beautiful hymns expresses it, "drop my burdens at His feet, and bear a song away."
After five weeks' treatment I could say I was a well woman. My limb had been straightened out and I could walk without pain or limping. My spine was straight and I could stand erect and free. How my heart overflowed with gratitude for my delivery from such cruel bondage. I was thankful that I had found an omnipresent God, who is always good and not capable of sending sickness to His children, and thankful to Mrs. Eddy for showing her love for mankind by sending this healing truth out to sick and discordant humanity, thus freeing mankind from error. The Bible was brought out and studied, and how different it all was as the "Key" unlocked its storehouse of treasures! I could not begin to enumerate the many blessings that an understanding of this truth has showered upon us.
