I cannot put off longer the duty and privilege of telling...
I cannot put off longer the duty and privilege of telling others what Christian Science has done for me and mine. In May, 1905, our oldest son, who was then fifteen, became very ill. He continued to grow worse for about six weeks, at the end of which time our family physician, together with a specialist, made an examination, and decided that there was an abnormal growth in the bowels, which prevented normal action. They advised an operation as the only possible chance of his recovery. We pleaded for some other method of relief, but they told us that there was none.
While the doctors were waiting for him to gain strength through dieting, before performing the operation, we were persuaded by a friend to try Christian Science for just one week. At the end of the week he was so much improved that we continued the treatment for two weeks more. At this point our physician, not knowing what we had been doing, declared it was dangerous to delay the operation any longer, but on examination he found that the tumor had disappeared. The doctor was very much surprised, and asked us to take the boy to a specialist. We did so, and he also said that the knife was not needed.
Since this experience we have all been helped in a great many ways. Our youngest son, who was then three years old, was hardly ever well. He seemed to be subject to bronchial attacks, which usually lasted for from two to three weeks. Our physician said to me: "You may try Christian Science for yourself, but when you use it for your baby in one of those attacks, you will have a funeral in your family." An attack came on a few weeks later, and was met and overcome in Christian Science in just twelve hours. The next time it stayed six hours, and that was the last one. Fever, colds, chronic bowel trouble, and much besides of both sin and disease, have been wiped out in our family. We have certainly proven that divine Love can and does "meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494), and we are endeavoring to live the life that will prove this absolute fact to others who need help as badly as we did.
