On reading Mr. Paget's address address on Christian Science...

Glasgow (Scot.) Herald

On reading Mr. Paget's address address on Christian Science before the Congregational Union at Sheffield, as reported in your columns, I was pleased to note that he pays a just tribute to the power of Christian Science when he acknowledges that "it has healed or is healing many invalids," that it has "enabled many people to give up smoking, alcohol, cocaine, or morphia; has made the restless more quiet, the subjects of this or that functional disorder more active, happy, and healthy." If Christian Science can do all this, surely it deserves the gratitude of the human race. Every doctor knows what a large percentage of the suffering and crime in the country is directly attributable to alcoholism. If Christian Science is able to heal this deadly habit, for that alone it deserves to be reckoned among the benefactors of the race.

The Rev. D. Horton, who follows, admits that Christian Science "makes for purity, happiness, and love, that it is on the side of virtue as against vice, and that however the movement may be criticized, it is impossible to make a crusade against anything which produces results of that kind." Surely all fair-minded people will agree with Mr. Horton, and stop abusing a system which is productive of so much good. Christian Science is the outcome of Mrs. Eddy's life and experience; those who have had the privilege of speaking with her face to face can never forget the strength and the sweetness, the dignity and the simplicity which told of a life consecrated to God.
