During the summer of 1906 I had occasion to call a Christian Science practitioner to treat our little son, as he was cutting teeth and I had some fear of the medical belief respecting the "second summer." I was very young in Science, my husband was away, and the only other adult member of the family was not a believer in Christian Science, and consequently filled with fear. On coming into my room one day, the practitioner found me holding the baby, who was in an alarming condition. She immediately said that we must deny the physical evidence, which she did most emphatically. This was the last convulsion he had, although it was some days before he walked, as he had lost flesh and seemed very weak; but the Scientist encouraged me to realize the nothingness of matter and the allness of God.
When this child was about two years of age he very suddenly began to stammer. I treated him to the best of my understanding and within a short time the error seemed to be met and he spoke naturally; but some time afterward it manifested itself again, and was apparently even worse than at first. The little fellow became conscious of his difficulty in speaking, as his playmates mocked and laughed at him, and to human view it was a serious and distressing situation. I realized that I was not meeting the "adversary," so I spoke to a practitioner, who helped me to see more clearly how to meet and master the error. It was not long before the sentence of materia medica was declared null and void, and this was over two years ago.
The latter part of the year 1906 my husband was taken with a severe cold and fever. A Christian Science practitioner was called, and the disease was overcome within a short time. Last winter an epidemic was said to be very prevalent here, and I fell into line with other unfortunates. Help was asked for in Christian Science, and I was able to dress every day, and the illness was overcome in a most gratifying way. We are truly thankful to God, also to Mrs. Eddy, for the truth which has helped us on this journey from sense to Soul.
