Daily Republican

A recent issue of your paper contained a despatch dated Mobile, in which the statement was made that J. C. Wilson, a Christian Scientist, had stepped in front of a moving trolley-car to "test his faith" in the power of Christian Science, with the result that he had to be taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries received. Careful inquiry develops the fact that Mr. Wilson is not a member of any Christian Science church. Investigation also appears to confirm the suspicion which one would naturally have gained by reading the despatch published in your paper, that the man is mentally unbalanced. However that may be, the fact remains that there is nothing in the teaching of Christian Science which could possibly be construed to justify such a foolhardy act as that of Mr. Wilson. Christian Scientists do not go about looking up ways of testing their faith. They have ample opportunity in the ordinary course of human events to test and prove their faith in the power of God. Therefore they believe that such performances as the one described in your columns are in the nature of "tempting God," and are not right.
