HELP ACKNOWLEDGED

An article on "Compassion" which appeared in the Sentinel some time ago brought to me a special lesson and much comforting assurance. Ever since I became a student of Christian Science, a few short years back, and through it beneficent influence gained a desire for purer affections and a transfer of faith in material things to the things that are real,—to spiritual things,—I have often been burdened and cast down through the seeming reality of the belief in matter, and because my friends and family continued to hold this belief, and no explanation I could give would change their views or induce them to make anything like an honest investigation of Christian Science as given to the world in Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy's other writings. In this way I sometimes came to feel that the truth would be my destroyer, because it seemingly isolated me from the ones I held most dear; but at length I was forced into knowing that truth does not destroy any good thing. I came to see that the agony I endured was only self-seen mortal mind being forced by its own convictions of the truth to give up its belief in matter, and in dependence upon personality. The process was to me a great struggle, but after each battle with self, and the burial of the dead beliefs, I took a new lease of life through a better understanding of the allness of God, good, and the impartiality of divine Love.

Such an understanding leads us to relinquish any and all strenuous expressions or actions in our efforts to change others' opinions. Rather do we learn to look inward for the erroneous beliefs which would drive us to attempt to do God's work, or any work, without the knowledge and guidance of divine Love. But Christian Science is an inexhaustible subject, and I rejoice that so many are now writing such valuable and helpful articles for our periodicals, by which we are helped on our way to the realization of the truth of being.
