Having been healed of a so-called incurable disease...
Having been healed of a so-called incurable disease through Christian Science, I feel it my duty to express in some way my gratitude to divine Love for the healing work which has been and still is being done in my behalf. For about eight years I suffered with kidney trouble, which in August, 1900, was pronounced incurable by two local physicians. I took different material remedies, and also tried hypnotism and magnetism; but all to no avail. During the winter of 1902–1903 I was told to go out West for a change of climate, as a last resort. The western climate, however, did me no good, the trouble getting decidedly worse as time went on.
I had heard of Christian Science before this, but had not given it any serious consideration; now, when all was hopelessness and despair, I decided to give it a trial, much in the same spirit as a drowning man grasps at a straw. Instead of the straw, however, I here grasped the very foundation of health and strength. Three weeks later, I was working at my regular occupation, that of a locomotive fireman, and although my complete healing was somewhat slow, I kept on gaining health and strength until, after two years of almost steady treatment, the disease finally vanished into its native nothingness. In the fall of 1905 I had to undergo a physical examination, and the physician who examined me pronounced me well, not a sign of the former trouble remaining.
To God first do I render thanks, then to our faithful, beloved Leader. I have been awakened from dark error's dream, and with St. John I can say, "I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea."
