When I was a young girl a very severe nervous affection...
When I was a young girl a very severe nervous affection came upon me, and I was kept at home from school. Physicians were employed and their directions were faithfully followed, but the trouble grew no less during some four years and the most trusted physician gave no certain prospect of health. Then my mother took me to a Christian Science practitioner for treatment. A few months later it was decided that, as I had no further attacks, I was able to attend school in a neighboring city. At first I went only one, sometimes two days a week. The following year I went oftener, and the next year every day. The Christian Science treatment was not of long duration. There was in two years but one more attack of the trouble, and gradually the fear of it was forgotten.
Fully five years later I needed to demonstrate the truth for myself. I was alone in my studio, writing a business letter. For two days I had felt uncertain as to which one of two things would be nearest right in a new business proposition. Suddenly my thought became confused, and I began to fear my former enemy; but quicker than thought could be put into words, this line from the Scripture came to me: "Be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage." Instantly there was freedom! Love was then and there found to be the "master of hate" (Science and Health, p. 44). Without a moment's loss of time the business letter was completed in absolute clearness as to what right to say and do. This incident occurred over six years ago, and there has been no trouble of that kind since then.
From early childhood I had a great fear of dogs, and often went a long way to avoid passing a house where I knew one was kept. After I had learned something of Christian Science, a good-sized dog ran out at me from a house near my home, but courage came to me in fuller measure than ever before, for there was a certainly that God is ever with His children. When I reached home I knew that a victory had been won, and a normal, happy liking for dogs has taken the place of dread of them.
