I first heard of Christian Science in 1888 through the healing of a very dear friend who had been hopelessly sick for several years. I was convinced at once that it was something good which had wrought this change in my friend, although it was several years before I made an effort to know for myself what this was that could heal without medicine. Early in 1892 I found myself suffering from an acute form of female trouble, the symptoms of which seemed quite alarming. The doctor that my husband called considered the conditions very serious. For about three weeks I took his medicine faithfully and applied the other remedies prescribed, and then, as the symptoms did not improve but rather grew worse, I decided to try Christian Science. I wrote to a practitioner for treatment, and the afternoon that she received my call for help I experienced a change; the weakness began to disappear and I decided that I was getting well. It seemed so good and so real that I finally decided to get up. My home needed attention very badly, as I was without help except what my husband could do after he came from his work. I proceeded to clean the rooms and found that it did not hurt me, but rather inspired me to do more. I made preparations for supper and had it all ready, much to the astonishment of my husband when he came home. He feared I would pay for this "foolishness," as he called it; but I experienced no bad effects at all, continued to improve, and in three days was practically free.

The treatment was continued for about a week longer, and by that time all the symptoms had disappeared. I was well, and although I had only a tract and some letters from the practitioner I began to feel that I knew something of Christian Science. I felt that only God could have done the work, and was confident that a mighty blessing had come to humanity through this new understanding of Him; nevertheless it was a year or so later before a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, was procured and the study of the Quarterly Lessons was begun. Since then I have become a member of The Mother Church, have nearly all of Mrs. Eddy's works, together with our other publications, and have never seen the time that I was not thankful for the many blessing which Christian Science has brought to me. The physical healing is the least of all. The spiritual enlightenment is by far the most important. One impression which I early received, and which has since grown into a grand and ever-growing conviction, is in regard to Mrs. Eddy's spiritual leadership. It seems so clear and so reasonable that poor mortals needed a Leader to guard and guide them out of the vicissitudes of this earthly life, that it does not seem strange to me that our heavenly Father should supply that need at this hour. I gratefully testify that whenever I live in obedience to the way pointed out by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, there has come to me each time overwhelming proofs of the exalted vision and divine guidance which surely could belong to God's Messenger alone.
