For twelve years I was a victim to the whiskey habit
For twelve years I was a victim to the whiskey habit. I reached the point where I wanted to be free of this disease, and after proving to myself that I was not able to cope with it I decided to take a well-known cure. At the end of this treatment, thirty days, I was told by the physician in charge of the institution that I was a well man. I had been at home only a few weeks when the desire returned, stronger it seemed than ever before. The only way I kept from taking a drink was in not going where liquor was sold. I did this for a few weeks, but the day came when I was unable longer to battle with the desire; I went back to whiskey, and was worse than ever before. I then felt that my case was hopeless, because I had tried the best that material medica held out for this disease, and it had failed to cure me.
It was at this time a very dear friend mentioned Christian Science to me. I replied that I would perhaps look into it some time, not thinking that I ever would; but the day soon came when I knew that something must be done for me. I recalled how gently my friend had spoken of Christian Science. I then decided to put aside my opposition to it and give it a trial. I applied to a practitioner for treatment, told her my case and bought a copy of the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. This was over two years ago, and from that day to this I have not taken a drink of any intoxicant. Later, Christian Science healed me of a terrible case of eczema in three treatments; whereas three doctors had worked for several months without results. I had been reading Science and Health three evenings, when the desire to use tobacco left me, and for more than two years I have not used it. I had been reading the text-book several months when I awoke to the fact that a case of catarrh of years' standing had left me. For years I had used for this disease atomizers and inhalers of all makes and sizes, besides many other remedies. I had gotten to the point that I dreaded to see the night come,—I could not sleep because I could not get my breath. This condition all passed away so quietly I did not notice the passing of it. I have been well now over two years without medicine, before which time I was almost always sick and taking medicine.
To be free of the appetite for whiskey is a small part of the healing. It is to be free of all that goes with whiskey and makes one unclean. I would say to any one who may read this, and who is a victim to whiskey drinking, Put aside your misconceptions of this blessed truth, and be healed. God healed me, and He will heal you if you will accept the truth. Since being healed I am not only able to help myself but others. To dear Mrs. Eddy my heart always goes out with the best love it knows, because she has awakened the world to the religion which Jesus taught,—to the truth that makes free—free from all that is unlike God, good. I am glad I live in an age in which the world is beginning to know God as omnipresent good, filling all space, all time; not a God afar off,—but here and now, without variableness or shadow of turning.
