Last May I was taken sick with what my physician called...

Last May I was taken sick with what my physician called pneumonia, which developed rapidly. After coming two or three times a day for more than a week, he told us that typhoid symptoms had set in and that my condition was quite serious, aside from another trouble which was even more alarming. This was hiccoughs, which for four days had continued steadily, and my strength was being very rapidly sapped. Although the doctor was giving me close attention and plenty of very strong medicines, he was unable to stop this trouble. At his last visit he said that if the hiccough was not stopped in a few hours he could not answer for the outcome.

After he had gone I asked my wife, who is a Christian Scientist, to telephone to the doctor not to call again and to ask a practitioner for absent treatment. I also asked her to read to me from Science and Health. This was late in the afternoon. I got up immediately, but was very weak and continued to hiccough. My wife kept up the reading and I went to sleep. At nine o'clock the hiccough stopped, at eleven o'clock I awoke with a severe coughing spell, after which the hiccoughs began again. The reading was resumed and at one o'clock the trouble was over. I slept well the balance of the night; the next morning I arose and ate my meals with the family.

For a long time I had believed that I could eat only certain articles of food, as I was a great sufferer from stomach trouble and was subject to severe attacks from neuralgia, but from the first day of my healing I have eaten anything I pleased, and with no inconvenience. I have also lost my desire to smoke, or to drink anything stimulating, even coffee and tea. I know I was healed by God's power, as revealed in Science and Health through the inspired thought of its author, Mrs. Eddy, and for this wonderful manifestation of God's goodness and love I am very grateful.—N.
