"The Mantle of Charity"

"And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity."

These gracious words of Paul have touched human hearts for many years and still are full of glad promise for those who long for true Christian living among men. Faith, hope, charity, these three graces or gifts of God, abide, endure, continue throughout all time, stable and sure as "the everlasting hills." They are the Father's benediction on work well done; and the greatest of these states of consciousness is charity, which is the active aftermath of universal benevolence or love.

Could we but have gentle charity as our daily, hourly guest, the crushing weight of unfeeling criticism would be lifted; the fear of ourselves and of others be overcome; and in its clear light, in the "holy of holies" of each struggling, striving heart, we should see eye to eye, for we would then know that the temptations of one are the temptations of all, and we should truly rejoice in the good our neighbor would do and finally will do, in the man he would be and finally will be. What a light would be shed on our path heavenward by the entertainment of this one gentle guest.
