Christian Science came to my aid at the time in my life...
Christian Science came to my aid at the time in my life when I most needed it,—when I was wickedly unhappy because, as I then believed, God had taken my mother from me. I never wanted to hear His name again; the old motto that hung on the wall, "God is Love," was only a mockery to me. To please a friend, a Christian Scientist, who, I dimly realized, had in some mysterious way made my mother's last hours happier and more free from pain, a fact which even the physicians admitted, I consented to read Science and Health.
In the long, lonely winter among strangers that followed, I slowly learned the lesson that "Divine Love always has met, and always will meet, every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494). Only by turning to the little book, could I conquer the paroxysms of grief and loneliness, and so I was impelled to keep up its study, and with it to open my Bible for the first time with real interest and pleasure. At the end of that winter, I could again say, "God is Love," for I had learned that He had not taken away my mother, and that only to this mortal, finite sense was I separated from her.
During my study, I had often wondered it my faith in Christian Science would be equal to a test in a physical emergency, for I had always been a great coward about pain. One morning, through a fall, I was badly burned by hot grease, and I also strained my back severely. The fear and pain were so great that I hurried to the nearest telephone and asked for help from a Scientist. In fifteen minutes I was absolutely free from pain, kept an engagement that afternoon, and the burn, which extended the length of my forearm, healed quickly and left no scar. It was about this time, too, that an inquiry from a friend made me realize that a cough of five years' duration, which had more than once reduced me to unconsciousness through exhaustion, and for which I had in vain tried all remedies, had entirely disappeared. I have never had a return of it since.
