I did not take up the study of Christian Science...
I did not take up the study of Christian Science for healing. but to learn more of the spiritual side of life. Its text-book seemed so difficult that I could not understand it, so I put it aside and never looked at it again for over twelve months.
One evening some friends were conversing about Christian Science with my husband in our drawing-room, and a gentleman said that these people gave testimonies at the Wednesday evening meetings of the demonstrations they had made. I was paying very little attention to the conversation but the word demonstrate seemed to fasten in my thought, and I looked at it in a new light. It seemed to me that home was a very good place for me to try to demonstrate in. At the same time the Quarterly had been brought to my notice. I always loved my Bible and it interested me very much to look up the Scripture texts in connection with the Lesson-Sermon. Still I could not understand Science and Health, but the passage on page 492, which refers to a great General's saying, "I propose to fight it out on this line if it takes all summer," encouraged me, and I concluded it would be well to follow this General's example and read Science and Health till I did understand it.
Sitting like Mary of old at the feet of the great teacher, Jesus, asking for obedience, light, wisdom, and understanding, error seemed to rise up on every side to confront me, but I persevered and now I will tell you of the result. I had suffered from a trouble in my back all my life. Sometimes for days at a time I would be unable to move in consequence of the severe pain and weakness I experienced. I had the advice of the best physicians, who said it was gout and that I had inherited it. Some of their prescriptions gave me temporary relief but they all failed to remove the disease, and it became so much a part of my life that I expected to have it to the end of my course.
