My final struggle to gain health and happiness through material means was in the gymnasium. My physician said it was the only means through which I had any chance of getting physical relief and strength, and that I should lose no time in placing myself under its care. I decided upon the Young Men's Christian Association, being religiously inclined and knowing their organization to be the best of its kind in the city. Although scarcely able to walk, I persisted in attending regularly and doing what I could with all the apparatus in the place, bathing and rubbing, hoping to receive that which was so necessary to aid me in supporting my wife and family,—physical health and strength.

After a mighty struggle for a few months I found myself very much benefited, and felt sure that my weary hope was realized; but the summer time was approaching, and I was forced to give up my exercises in the gymnasium—first, on account of the heat, and secondly because the closing of that part of the institution for the summer months was announced.

My material props abandoned, not many days passed when a collapse came that was worse than any previous attack, and I was once more a physical wreck, unable to attend to my duties.
