"The people had a mind to work"

When the members of a Church of Christ, Scientist, undertake to build or remodel a church edifice, they often find encouragement by reminding themselves of Nehemiah's experience in rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem under most unfavorable circumstances. (See Nehemiah, Chapters 2 to 6.)

In this Biblical account, it is evident that what aroused Nehemiah to undertake such a difficult assignment was the deep desire to restore and preserve the worship of the one God and thus keep the people from idolatry. The work demanded of him brought out in him and in his fellow workers the qualities that were needed to complete the task, qualities without which they would have failed.

Centuries later, Mrs. Eddy was led by God to undertake a task, the importance and magnitude of which even her followers only partially recognize and appreciate. When she saw in the teachings and demonstrations of Christ Jesus the demonstrable Science of Christ, her concept of Christian theology was clarified to the point where she undertook the difficult task of restoring to Christian worship the Christly element of divine healing. The world today is the beneficiary of her great work.
