Activities for the Armed Services

A serviceman who, with his wife, had been attending services conducted by a Christian Science Minister for the Armed Services but who knew little of Christian Science became resentful because his wife stopped drinking and smoking after beginning its study. He thought that he could no longer go to parties because his wife was out of step with their friends. The situation reached a crisis and the serviceman asked his wife for a divorce.

Immediately the wife called a Christian Science Minister for help. She clung to the statement in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 167), "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized," and knew that because of her desire to take a radical stand, God would sustain her. In a few days the serviceman said he had thought the matter over and decided not to seek a divorce, because he loved his family dearly.

However, he said he wanted to purchase a bar and have a party. Again his wife took her stand and said that for the sake of their children she thought it wrong to have a bar in their home. More prayerful work was done by the Minister. The wife was encouraged to love more—to love God's perfect child and to know that aggressive mental suggestion always fades into nothingness in the presence of God.
