PRESENTING THE CHRIST IDEAL IN SUNDAY SCHOOL

"Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven" (Matt. 19:14). The child thought for which Jesus here so tenderly expressed his regard is gently nourished and wisely led to a beginning understanding of the Christ ideal in the Christian Science Sunday School. Here the textbooks are the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The truths in these two books, prayerfully studied by the teachers and understandingly imparted to the pupils, lead the children to a demonstrable acceptance of the true idea of God and man, which Jesus so consistently expressed.

Our Leader's deep appreciation of the Bible as a great stabilizing influence is expressed on page 24 of Science and Health. Here she writes, "Acquaintance with the original texts, and willingness to give up human beliefs (established by hierarchies, and instigated sometimes by the worst passions of men), open the way for Christian Science to be understood, and make the Bible the chart of life, where the buoys and healing currents of Truth are pointed out."

Science and Health shows the child how to learn of the Christ. It explains that Divine Science is the Comforter promised by the Master and that this Comforter needs only to be understood and utilized. Mrs. Eddy grasped something of the spiritual import of Jesus' work when she was divinely led to open the Bible and read the account of Jesus' healing of the palsied man as related in the ninth chapter of Matthew.
