THE LITTLE WORD "IN"

The little word "in" plays an important role in the religion of Christian Science. This Science teaches that God, Spirit, is the one and only creator of the universe, including man, and that the creator cannot be in the creation which is the outcome or emanation of His perfect being. Christian Science teaches that God is infinite, divine Mind, and that His entire universe is constituted only of spiritual ideas, which dwell forever in the perfect Mind and reflect its qualities eternally. Paul says that in God we live, move, and have our being.

In her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 468), "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." It should be noted that our Leader does not write that God is All in all, but uses the hyphenated term "All-in-all," which brings out the fact that God, being All, includes all creation within Himself.

Many Christians believe that Jesus is God, that God at one time assumed a human form and lived on earth among men for a span of years as Christ Jesus. If this were true, then God would at one time have become limited or absorbed within mortality and would Himself have become subject to death. But the Master never referred to himself as God, but frequently indicated that he considered himself to be His Son. Christian Science teaches that the qualities of the divine nature of God were present in the master Christian, and this is what is meant when God is referred to as being in Jesus.
