I became interested in Christian Science...

I became interested in Christian Science when I was a very young child and had the great privilege of attending a Christian Science Sunday School; also I had the benefit of consecrated teachers, who gave me a firm foundation in the knowledge of Truth and who taught me how to destroy error, not to fear it. Just how much of a privilege it was, I began to realize when living in the Canal Zone.

During the early construction years of the Panama Canal, there were various types of tropical diseases. My mother and I had a severe attack of blackwater fever, called a malignant type of malarial fever. Very few natives or others survived this malady.

Owing to strong medical supervision, it was necessary for us to make a firm decision between reliance on medical means or on Christian Science. As we had always applied our knowledge of Christian Science to all problems, we naturally turned to it. A cable was sent to a Christian Science practitioner who lived in the United States.

In the meantime one of the local doctors, knowing about our condition, came to the house and predicted that I had three days to live, but they might be able to help me if I would go to the hospital. I refused all medical help and took a definite stand because I wanted my healing to come through God alone. I knew that "only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized," as Mary Baker Eddy says on page 167 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."

On the third day there was every indication of my passing on. The practitioner had started to work that very day, and so effective was this work that there was an immediate change for the better and from then on a gradual improvement.

The practitioner asked us to read and hold to this citation from Science and Health (p. 249): "Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy." She also asked us to know that there are no laws to cause chills or fever.

A friend living at some distance, knowing of the opposition to Christian Science in the community, greatly helped by taking us into her home. When returning from the friend's home, healed, I was met at the train by the same doctor who had visited me, and he said, "This is truly a miracle, and only a higher power could have caused your recovery." My mother was also healed. There has never been a recurrence of the fever.

During this time other difficulties were also healed. My sight had become dim, and I was hardly able to see out of one eye. It was quite a few months before this condition was entirely overcome, but my expectancy of a complete healing did not waver. The healing has been permanent.

For this entire experience, for the consecrated work of the practitioner, for the loving co-operation and support of our many friends, I am most humbly grateful.

Many lessons have been learned on our journey from sense to Soul, and healings of sin, sickness, and lack have resulted from them. It is a great privilege to be a member of The Mother Church and to have served in many capacities in a branch church. Class instruction opened up a whole new outlook and a deeper understanding of God.

I am deeply grateful to God for our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, and for our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who gave us the revelation of Truth, found in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, for the benefit of all the world.—(Mrs.) Thyrza V. Russon, Miami, Florida.

When in 1942 a friend introduced me to the teachings of Christian Science, I saw in a flash that it was the truth. Never had I been able to accept the idea that God, good, could create man in His image and then allow him to sin, suffer, and die, as so many people still believe. I immediately saw that God could have no knowledge of sin, disease, or death, for as the prophet Habakkuk says of Him (1:13), "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity."

Since then Christian Science has revolutionized my life, and I cannot imagine living without it. Apart from being of inestimable help in overcoming faults of character, it has brought me many healings, not only of physical troubles but also of conditions of lack.

Early in my experience as a student of Christian Science I was instantaneously healed of laryngitis, which had threatened to prevent me from carrying out a lecture engagement. When I turned to the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and realized the truth of man's perfection as the image of God, the condition simply vanished into its nothingness. This has been a great inspiration to me in the intervening years.

By clinging to the definition of "eyes," given on page 586 of Science and Health, which reads, "Spiritual discernment,—not material but mental," and by refusing to believe that either an eye test or the placing of two pieces of mindless matter before my so-called physical eyes could improve my spiritual vision, which I knew was already perfect, I was able to overcome a troublesome eye difficulty.

When I gave up struggling humanly and leaned on God entirely, knowing that He always maintains me in my right place in Mind, I found useful, congenial work after many months of frustration and fruitless applications.

These three instances are typical of the many healings I have experienced since first coming into Christian Science. No wonder that my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy grows with every step forward I take. I give thanks for the privilege of membership in The Mother Church and in a Christian Science Society, for the wonderful experience of class instruction, which has opened up endless vistas of increased understanding, and for the opportunities I am having of helping others by-putting what I have learned into practice.—Michael Vernon Kitchin, Chalfont St. Peter, Buckinghamshire, England.
