Mary Baker Eddy states in "Miscellaneous Writings"...
Mary Baker Eddy states in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 113), "Mind that is God is not in matter; and God's presence gives spiritual light, wherein is no darkness." For some understanding of this spiritual light that is revealed to us through the study of Christian Science, I am exceedingly grateful.
During the years that I have been a student of this religion, many proofs of the healing power of Christian Science have been experienced by me and my family. Pneumonia, kidney stones, and scarlet fever have been overcome and business and financial problems solved.
One of the experiences for which I am most grateful is the healing of a large and ugly growth. When it first appeared, I ignored it instead of quickly denying the condition and affirming the truth as we are taught to do in Christian Science. When it became painful, I called a Christian Science practitioner for help and at the same time set about diligently studying the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings in an effort to see its unreality.
Very soon after I had telephoned to the practitioner, the severe pain left. However, the condition itself remained unchanged. Several days later the practitioner reminded me that any form of sin or disease is merely a belief that darkness or error is real, and she pointed out that the light of Truth would penetrate it.
After I had talked to her, the word "penetrate" stood out to me very clearly, and thereafter I held firmly to the thought that the truth that I was knowing and that was being declared for me, namely that God is All-in-all, was capable of penetrating any darkened belief I was entertaining to the contrary.
The statement quoted above, together with a verse from the Bible, was helpful to me. The Bible verse reads (Ps. 119:130), "The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple." In a day or two an incision appeared in this growth, and it quickly dissipated. The next day I was again about my normal duties. This occurred several years ago, and there has been no recurrence of the condition.
At another time my husband had a wonderful healing of sinus infection, which he had had for several years prior to becoming interested in Christian Science. Soon after taking up this study he talked to a practitioner about this condition, which appeared at regular intervals.
The next day the pain and the accompanying extreme discomfort began early in the morning. He called the practitioner, and she told him to pick up Science and Health and to start reading wherever he opened the book. He obeyed, but the pain and the physical manifestations were so severe that he could not see the page. Instead of putting the book down, however, he continued to attempt to hold it in an effort to read it. Within a very few minutes his head cleared, he could see to read, and the condition completely disappeared, never to return.
This took place about twenty-six years ago. The healing was particularly helpful in that my husband knew very little of Christian Science at the time. It was proved to him that whenever we are willing to turn wholeheartedly to God for healing, we are healed, whether we have studied one day or many years.
Membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church has always been a rewarding experience. Likewise, class instruction has opened the door to a greater understanding of Christian Science, which meets every need.—(Mrs.) Dorothy Short, Kansas City, Missouri.
