ARE WE ONLY HUMAN?

Shortcomings are sometimes shrugged off with the excuse, "We are only human." This excuse, intended to indicate tolerance and understanding, is invalid in Christian Science, which teaches that man in the likeness of God is spiritual. To help us understand the perfection of our true selfhood is the goal of Christian Science practice.

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 43): "The divine must overcome the human at every point. The Science Jesus taught and lived must triumph over all material beliefs about life, substance, and intelligence, and the multitudinous errors growing from such beliefs."

Christ Jesus taught and demonstrated God's supremacy and man's inseparable relationship to Him by restoring what the human mind considered lost power and hope. Among the "multitudinous errors" he healed were those of leprosy, palsy, moral degeneration, fear, and lack. By giving precedence to his teachings over human methods, we likewise overcome false mortal beliefs, which are the source of all suffering.
