I had been attending a Christian Science Sunday School from the age of seven. My parents, however, were not students of Christian Science. When I was sixteen I had a hyperthyroid condition and was placed under a doctor's care. A year's treatment proved unsuccessful, and it was necessary for me to undergo an operation. This occurred in the middle of the summer. As a result I suffered a severe nervous breakdown and was placed under the care of a psychiatrist.

It was at about this time that a secretary in my father's office overheard my father telling another employee about my condition. The secretary had recently been healed through Christian Science of a serious condition. She asked if she could visit and talk to me of the healing power of Christian Science. My father consented.

At first I was hostile to the thought of turning to God for healing, since I had decided to rely entirely on medicine. However, "man's extremity is God's opportunity," and I shall always be grateful to this woman who went out of her way to share the blessing she had received. She left Christian Science literature for me to read, and shortly afterward my mother and I were led to seek the help of a Christian Science practitioner.
