FOLLOWING THE CHRIST

Several years ago two friends were traveling from one city to another, a distance of one hundred miles. Each was driving his own car. It was night, and the mist was heavy. One man knew the way well, and so it was agreed that the other was to follow the lead car closely. However, when the lead car arrived at its destination, the car following was nowhere in sight.

The next day when the friends met, the driver of the lead car asked his friend why he had not followed. He replied: "I did follow, but I followed so far behind that eventually I lost sight of you. Had I followed closely I would not have lost the way."

Once while reading the twenty-second chapter of Luke's Gospel, which includes the account of Judas' betrayal of Christ Jesus, the writer was impressed by verse 54, which states, "Then took they him, and led him, and brought him intothe high priest's house." The account continues in these meaningful words: "And Peter followed afar off."
