THE RENEWING POWER OF SPIRIT

There is a constant and infinite force of renewal operating universally in our behalf. This is the power of God, as present as God is, and it is available to bless our individual human lives to the extent of our acknowledgment and understanding of its presence. The Christian Scientist recognizes this renewing influence as the activity of the Christ. It operates in the fleshly experience to correct thought and thereby to heal the objectification of thought, the body.

Mary Baker Eddy points out in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 241), "The Bible teaches transformation of the body by the renewal of Spirit." The power of Spirit, God, abides in the consciousness of everyone. But to gain the blessings of the renewing action of Spirit, one must honor its power in his experience. As no useful idea ignorantly or willfully rejected is of any practical value to us in our daily activities, so the Christ, the divine idea of God, Spirit, is of no measurable value to us unless we understand it and make use of it.

Paul advised the Romans (12: 2), "Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." To the degree that we conform our thoughts to the world, we are resisting and rejecting the renewing power of Spirit. There is no purification by the power of Spirit in the experience of those who allow their thoughts and lives to be dominated by carnal beliefs and manners. And true health is not demonstrated by one who holds on to sickly mortal error, to one who fears, believes in, or talks disease.
