MAN WHOLLY APART FROM MATTER
A Simple statement in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy presents one of the most revolutionary concepts of Christian Science. The statement reads (p. 475), "Man is spiritual and perfect."
The concept of man as a spiritual idea, not a material and mental personality, is contrary to centuries of religious and human thought. Yet this concept stems logically from the Bible teachings that "God is a Spirit" (John 4: 24) and that man is created in the image of God (see Gen. 1:27).
When the decision is made to depart from accepted human beliefs about man, the Christian Scientist begins his demonstration, which progressively frees him from the limitations that surround and restrict him. In proportion as the individual accepts his spiritual status as his only true being and sees it wholly apart from the material imperfect personality which would claim to be his own, he begins to bring into his experience the harmony and freedom that are the birthright of man, the son of God.
