About fifty years ago, my parents...
About fifty years ago, my parents became interested in Christian Science at the time of an epidemic of typhoid pneumonia which had threatened our household and of which I was a victim. The doctor had given up all hope for my recovery, and a kind neighbor introduced Christian Science to our family. I was healed, and thereafter my parents became earnest students of this religion. Although I embraced it only halfheartedly at the time, I soon began to attend the Christian Science Sunday School.
Looking back, I can see that I was divinely led, with the faithful efforts of practitioners, to work out each problem that presented itself. While serving our church as organist and on various committees, I overcame timidity and fear. As a result of the patient encouragement of a practitioner and earnest study, I found I could solve difficulties that arose, for as Paul states (Phil. 4:13), "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Accepting an appointment in our Reading Room and having the blessed privilege of class instruction opened avenues for me to help others, and this experience was indeed priceless.
About a year ago my husband passed on very suddenly, and I was left quite alone. I realized there was a lot of prayerful metaphysical work to do to maintain my understanding of man's indestructible relationship with God. I endeavored to keep my thoughts close to God, but mortal mind raised its voice very loudly. I reached for the Christian Science Hymnal, which was close by, and turned immediately to Hymn No. 183, the last lines of which read.
