When a comparatively young man, I was told that I probably had only a few years to live. Suffering from indigestion and malnutrition, I had become emaciated.

At the urging of a young woman in my employ, I was persuaded to consult a Christian Science practitioner. For weeks I argued with this practitioner over metaphysical problems, for I had studied, written, and lectured on philosophy for a number of years. The practitioner graciously allowed me to express my views and patiently helped me.

Finally I glimpsed the spiritual truth which the practitioner had been endeavoring to impart to me. The experience was in a way similar to that of Saul, who, on his way to persecute Christians, suddenly saw a light from heaven and heard a voice which changed his life and made of him one of the greatest apostles of Christianity the world has ever known.
