Each successive stage of experience...

"Each successive stage of experience unfolds new views of divine goodness and love" (Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 66). This comforting assurance of our Leader has been proved over and over in my experience as a Christian Scientist. Often the way has seemed extremely rugged, but when obstacles have been overcome, truly each new vista of divine Love has surpassed that which was previously known.

With the hope that it may be of help to another, I should like to write of a recent proof of God's sustaining care. My mother and husband passed on in close succession. In spite of having apparently lost two of my dearest sources of human love, I have become aware of a most wonderful sense of spiritual comfort. At first, grief so overwhelmed me that the only thing I could grasp was that my duty to my children demanded my keeping on in an orderly way. All prospect for joy seemed forever lost.

Through the loving help of a practitioner, I was wonderfully sustained, but the question of why such a thing as this should have happened tormented me greatly. This sentence on page 124 of Science and Health was pointed out to me: "The universe, like man, is to be interpreted by Science from its divine Principle, God, and then it can be understood; but when explained on the basis of physical sense and represented as subject to growth, maturity, and decay, the universe, like man, is, and must continue to be, an enigma."
