The Apostle Peter says (I Pet. 3:15), "Be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you." The study of Christian Science has taught me how to give a reason for the hope that is in me, for it has healed me in times of sickness, comforted me in sorrow, and supplied my needs in periods of lack.

My first experience in Christian Science came when I visited a practitioner, who said, "I'll help you now," and gave me a silent treatment. Depression and fear were destroyed, and I experienced a consciousness of joyful hope. As I walked homeward the sun seemed brighter, the grass greener, and I saw more smiling faces than I had ever before noticed. The dark world was gone.

This took place before I had read a word of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which I had just purchased. For the first few weeks of study I carried the textbook with me constantly, and when depression and discouragement became unbearable, I would stop wherever I was, read the textbook, and find the comfort I needed.
