"Blessed are they which do...

"Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled" (Matt. 5:6). These words from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, better understood through Christian Science, satisfied a yearning I had had since childhood. Although I was brought up in a good Christian home, the teachings of our orthodox religion seemed vague and saddening. As a child I made a compulsory vow to my pastor never to sin, but I could not understand it, for I was told that I was born in sin and was a sinner. This confusing situation haunted me.

Following a broken marriage, I entered into the business world. Then I began suffering from what was diagnosed as nervous exhaustion and a skin disease. At various times weeks were spent in bed, and different methods of treatment were sought, much of the time in a well-known clinic. What discouraged me was that I received the same verdict over and over: "We don't know the cause. We will try one thing; if that does not help, we will try something else."

A specialist at the clinic asked, "Have you ever thought of trying Christian Science?" But I dismissed that thought. Finally, while spending a week end with friends who were Christian Scientists, I suffered a relapse. Then, in my extremity, I was willing to try Christian Science.
