In the First World War, I was...

In the First World War, I was critically wounded and was finally discharged as unfit for further war service. In the next decade I had more unhappy and extremely painful experiences culminating in an organic condition for which medical specialists said they could operate only experimentally. I occasionally lost time from work and underwent hospitalization. It was at this point of human despair that in 1930 I met a young woman in whom I became interested.

The time came when I poured out my troubles to her, but instead of getting emotionally disturbed she quietly said, "That never happened to the real man." I did not then know what she meant, but I felt very much comforted. Later she told me she was a Christian Scientist and subsequently offered me a book, remarking, "If you will read this, it will do you good."

The truth in that book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, has never ceased to bless me. Although I had suffered regularly from intense headaches, since reading Science and Health I have never experienced another. I was likewise healed of chronic constipation, prolapsed bowels, acute indigestion, annual attacks of tonsillitis, and retching. Drinking and heavy smoking dropped away, together with swearing and gambling. Also, I found myself healed of longstanding foot trouble and of painful corns. Since the organic condition mentioned earlier had not yielded, I felt compelled to seek help from a Christian Science practitioner. He lovingly agreed to give me treatment, and I was instantaneously healed at that time. This healing had a profound effect on me.
