The Substitue Teacher

[From a superintendent in a branch church Sunday School]

One of the helpful and rewarding positions on the staff of a Christian Science Sunday School is that of substitute teacher. His work is a blessing to the regular teacher, who is concerned with the progress of the children in his class when he has to be absent; a blessing to the children, who welcome the occasional return of a friend to whom they can relate proofs of their progress; and a blessing to the superintendent, when the substitute is willing and ready to teach any class.

A thorough understanding of the provisions for teaching in the Sunday School, found in Article XX of the Manual of The Mother Church by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, is important to the welfare of the whole Sunday School. Especially important is Section 3, which concludes with these words: "The instruction given by the children's teachers must not deviate from the absolute Christian Science contained in their textbook." This does not limit the scope of the teacher's work, but opens for him a broad field of instruction.

Often the regular teacher has no opportunity to tell the substitute just what the class has been learning or how far along the children are with the "first lessons." The substitute must be able to take over the class, relying wholly on divine Love or Principle for guidance in the children's needs and progress.
