In 1925 I heard of Christian Science...

In 1925 I heard of Christian Science for the first time. I was greatly impressed by seeing my fiancee healed of an extreme fear of darkness. At a Wednesday testimony meeting, she heard someone tell of a healing of fear and refer to the Scripture (I John 4:18), "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear." These words remained in her consciousness, and she was healed. Therefore I went with her to the next Wednesday testimony meeting to learn something of the power of Truth.

At that time my position was not a good one; so we could not afford to marry. I had not dared to give up the position I had and seek a better one, because during that year there was a great deal of unemployment in our country. But after attending the testimony meeting, I felt sure that God could do everything for us. I resigned my position and began to search for better employment.

However, I had to learn to wait for God's direction, and this period of waiting, during which I took needful human steps, was full of blessings. I was not anxious for one moment, nor did I doubt God's ability to take care of His children. Then one day a friend gave me a copy of The Christian Science Journal containing an article called "Giving versus Getting."
