Signs of the Times

Peter Kewi Dagadu
quoted in an editorial in
The Christian Century
Chicago, Illinois

According to Peter Kewi Dagadu, general secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, "Christianity . . . was an important factor in bringing independence to Ghana. Western control worked itself out of Ghana in the very process of bringing our people its civilization and Christianity.

"Christianity gave the people a full understanding of the meaning of freedom. They could do nothing else but seek to attain it. You cannot seek for freedom until you are developed. By introducing education and evangelism, the missionaries helped open the way for advancement, and that advancement inevitably meant independence."
