FEEDING THE WORLD'S FAMINE
The Bible speaks of periodic famines which plagued the people. These famines were sometimes considered to be God's method of punishing national sins. It is not correct to assume that sin is the only cause for want and woe.
Christian Science teaches that fear and ignorance also may be the sources of discord and depression. But whatever may seem to be the origin of inharmony or lack, Christian Science, with its comforting message of Truth, points out that these errors can be overcome through one's understanding of and obedience to God's perfect law of harmony and abundance.
When a righteous man, woman, or child suffers lack or affliction, some may complain, "If God is good, why does He permit the good to suffer?" From Biblical precedent, we know that God does not afflict; He does not cause the good to suffer. God does not send famine, disease, or death. "God is love," said John, the beloved disciple (I John 4:8). And Habakkuk points out that God is "of purer eyes than to behold evil" (1:13).
