What the Sunday School Has Meant to Me

[This is the fourth of five addresses given in the Extension of The Mother Church on June 4, 1958, in the interest of the Christian Science Sunday School. The last address will appear next week.]

It has meant a right beginning! Our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, pointed out how valuable this is when she wrote, "To begin rightly is to end rightly" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 262).

When in my earlier school years brute force and violence seemed to me more manly than acts of love, the inspired teachings of a Christian Science Sunday School teacher showed me that it required greater strength and courage to love my enemies. This lesson carefully taught in an hour of need was never forgotten and served years later when I was assigned to a position in our Army as an officer in charge of bayonet instruction.

My Sunday School training, college organization activities, and class instruction had trained me to preserve life with its God-given liberties and had proved to me that moral courage, combined with love, is strong and effective; whereas animal courage, hatred, and revenge are totally ineffective in accomplishing any lasting good. I prayed, as I had been taught, to subject myself to God's commands, His laws, His will. The next day I was made a Leadership Instructor.
