In 1934 it was proved to me that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." While I was at work, I was stricken with such pain that I had to be brought home by a fellow workman. My wife, who is a student of Christian Science, called a practitioner and then asked me to repeat the Lord's Prayer after her. This I did with much effort.

My company asked me to have a medical examination, and a physician was called. He at once rushed me to the hospital, where three doctors diagnosed the ailment as ulcers of the stomach. The next evening the head surgeon said to my wife: "This is a miracle. We do not have to operate. The only thing I can say is that there is a greater power than ours that has made the operation unnecessary."

I was taken home and given all I wanted to eat, though I had not been permitted to eat anything while in the hospital. The physician said I must not work for at least one year, but with the help of the practitioner and my study of the Bible Lessons in the Christian Science Quarterly, I was back at work in six weeks. I have missed only a few days in the twenty-four years since that time. Other healings took place at the same time; among them were those of smoking and social drinking.
