From the bottom of my heart I...

From the bottom of my heart I thank God for Christian Science, and I bear witness that it is the promised Comforter. My heart is full of gratitude to the practitioner, who, by her patience, faithfulness, and spiritual understanding, helped me when my need was great. Through her prayerful work and our steadfast clinging to the truth of being, I was healed of more things than I care to enumerate, among them a nervous breakdown, a fallen stomach, anemia, constipation, and sinus trouble. A wastebasket full of tonics and medicines was destroyed when I began the study of Christian Science in earnest.

The Bible promise became illumined (II Cor. 5:17), "If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." The greatest sense of peace I had ever known came to me, and a joy beyond anything the world can give. Also I felt a greater sense of love for God and man. Much fear was destroyed by my clinging to the Bible truth (II Tim. 1:7), "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." Many false traits of character began to disappear, and a higher meaning of obedience and honesty unfolded.

I was also healed of all desire to participate in social drinking and smoking, and for this freedom I am most grateful. Later I gave up the coffee and tea habits after hearing a testimony at a Wednesday testimony meeting by a man who was healed when he read that Mrs. Eddy put these stimulants in the same class with opium, under the marginal heading of "Morbid cravings." She writes (Science and Health, p. 406), "The depraved appetite for alcoholic drinks, tobacco, tea, coffee, opium, is destroyed only by Mind's mastery of the body." The drinking of another stimulant was also discontinued when a friend pointed out that it has the same drug in it that coffee has.
