At the age of eleven I was stricken...

At the age of eleven I was stricken with a severe case of rheumatic fever, combined with St. Vitus's dance, which necessitated my absence from school for several months. My condition was such that I could do nothing for myself.

My mother had recently become interested in Christian Science, and she requested the help of a practitioner. Through this help and our own persistent efforts in the truth, both diseases gradually yielded. I regained weight and strength sufficiently to enter school the following term. Attendance was without difficulty, and I was promoted with the rest of my class at the usual time. The following spring, the St. Vitus's dance returned, but it was quickly overcome and has never again recurred. After that healing, I enjoyed better health than ever before.

I should also like to relate an incident which occurred when I was attending school. Once a week we attended school in another district for domestic science classes, and this required a twenty-minute walk through a thickly populated area. I had just been given a new pen and pencil set, and on the way home from class the pen dropped out of the box in which it was being carried. When I reached home I was very upset to find that I had lost the pen, and immediately I began to declare the truth.
