"What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me? . . I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people" (Ps. 116:12, 14). My first introduction to Christian Science came when at the age of twelve I attended the Christian Science Sunday School for a short period. Although I did not become a student at that time, the seed was planted, and the knowledge of truth gained then saved my life fourteen years later, as is related in the following experience.

My brother and I were swimming in a river which was rather deep and treacherous. All of a sudden I was engulfed in a whirlpool or undertow. An overwhelming sense of fear possessed me and resulted in extreme physical weakness, and I sank for the first time. When I came to the surface my brother attempted to rescue me, but he also became so weakened from the struggle that he decided to swim out to shallow water to regain his strength and then return to my aid.

As I was very fond of my brother and did not realize why it was necessary for him to leave me, it was a great disappointment to me to be left in this predicament.
