"I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill" (Ps. 3:4). As a small child, because of the illness that was ever in our family, I asked God to show me a remedy for human suffering. He indeed hears and answers prayer, but it was many years before I heard Him. In 1928 a loved aunt was healed of pneumonia through Christian Science.

Soon after, physicians offered me no real hope when I manifested symptoms of heart as well as kidney trouble. Remembering the demonstration of pure Christian healing I had witnessed, I turned to Christian Science, but only for intellectual satisfaction; I had no hope that the medical verdict could be reversed. I purchased the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings, subscribed to the authorized literature, and attended church services and lectures.

A few weeks brought unmistakeable physical improvement, but it came so gently that it was brushed aside as coincidence. When painful manifestations I had suffered since childhood ceased, I saw that the Science of Christ was in operation on my behalf, and as Mrs. Eddy writes of her own experience (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 23): "Being was beautiful, its substance, cause, and currents were God and His idea. I had touched the hem of Christian Science."
