SAVING OUR CITY

The sad effects of recent wars and the invention of atomic weapons have deepened mankind's yearning for peace and security. Men acknowledge that universal peace is an urgent necessity and that war must be abolished through the conquest of fear and animosity.

We read of Abraham's praying to God many centuries ago and saying (Gen. 18:23), "Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?" God's promise to the ancient patriarch was this: if ten righteous men could be found in Sodom, the city would be saved. Today, even as then, the righteous are needed to save our "city," to save humankind. On page 286 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" Mary Baker Eddy writes, "For many years I have prayed daily that there be no more war, no more barbarous slaughtering of our fellow-beings; prayed that all the peoples on earth and the islands of the sea have one God, one Mind; love God supremely, and love their neighbor as themselves."

It is our privilege and duty to pray for world peace daily. Christian Science teaches us how to pray effectively, with signs following. Our prayer includes a scientific understanding and a grateful acknowledgment of the ever-presence and perfection of God. We know Him to be all-loving, all-wise, and ever-available Principle, applicable to all human problems. Unswerving faith in the omnipotence of Truth and the denial of the reality or power of evil constitute prayer in Christian Science.
