"ATOMIC ACTION IS MIND"

In an age in which the atom and its action are receiving first attention, it is helpful to consider what Christian Science teaches regarding this subject. Mary Baker Eddy's article "There Is No Matter," which appears in her book "Unity of Good," was no doubt more startling when it was published about a half century ago than at the present time, when matter is acknowledged by physicists to be expendable force.

Mrs. Eddy rested her contention that there is no matter upon the Scriptural teaching that God is Spirit, intelligence, and that Spirit is All. Matter has no quality of Spirit; it is finite, nonintelligent, destructible, and subject to disorder, and it is also destructive in its basic nature.

In the article mentioned, Mrs. Eddy makes this statement (Unity of Good, pp. 35,36): "The material atom is an outlined falsity of consciousness, which can gather additional evidence of consciousness and life only as it adds lie to lie. This process it names material attraction, and endows with the double capacity of creator and creation."
